Week 4 & 5: Wikipedia Article

Wikipedia is perhaps the best example of crowd-sourced collaborative project that has transformed the landscape of information on the digital space. During the pre-digital age, people would buy expensive encyclopedias to access information about the world. And, most of the users would not be able to contribute to those encyclopedias. The presence of Wikipedia has changed all that.

For this project, students will first read Wikipedia articles and other resources on how this common resource of knowledge and information works. Students will understand the best practices of Wikipedia entry writing, and produce one–contributing to the world some of their labor while also gaining credit for this course.

You will spend the next two weeks researching for and writing an article to be published in Wikipedia. First, go through the following link and understand the process of producing a new entry to Wikipedia.

One you have a fairly accurate sense of how Wikipedia works, find out something that you want to write about . You should write about something for which Wikipedia does not have an entry now. Once you figured out the topic of your entry, you should propose the topic to me (1) showing the evidence that an entry for such topic does not currently exist, (2) the justifying the value of such entry, and (3) detailing the scope of the article and the process you will use to write it.

One you write the article, you will submit both the draft of your work and the Wikipedia link to the article you wrote.

Then, you will also produce a blog post (about 400 words) for your website describing your experience regarding the contribution to the Wikipedia.
